Mac OS X is Apple's operatingsystem for its line of Macintosh computers. Its interface, known asAqua, is built on a Unix foundation. Although ithas much of the look and feel of the former Mac OS,features such as preemptive multitasking, symmetric multiprocessing, multithreading, and protected memory give Mac OS X improved stabilityand performance. For the current version's system requirements, seeApple's Mac OS XTechnical Specifications.

The advantages of Mac OS X are user friendly, simple and nice user interface, security and maturity of OS kernel because it's based on darwin which is a FreeBSD based kernel. Where'as the disadvantages are3rd party software application support although it's growing slowly but. Every since OS X was created, allowing Apple users to use PC programs on a Mac, the world changed and expanded for Apple users. PC users still sat in the same place as before. Macs are not the end-all, be-all for computing, but they do have significant advantages to a PC computer. Mac OS X is a very powerful OS. Its multiple layers provide this power in many areas, such as graphics, the Internet, and so on. Its standards-based networking architecture enables you to connect to any system, anywhere. And you have much greater, direct access to system processes than ever before.

Mac OS X β€” The Basics. Mac OS X is the operating system of your Mac. It’s the basic system that enables your Mac to work. All the files, folders and programs are handled by Mac OS X as well as internet connectivity, battery consumption and more. As a Mac user, you will encounter Mac OS X in many different forms: When viewing the desktop. The advantages to a Mac OS is security, reliability and advanced technology while the disadvantages include a heftier price tag, a very limited gaming option and an operating system that does not accommodate upgrades or customization.

Currently, four Mac OS X-related products are available:

Disadvantages Of Mac Os X

Mac OS X: This is the version most Macintoshowners should use. It is a consumer operating system designed for useon your personal computer. For more information, see Apple's Mac OS X page and Developer page forMac OS X.

Mac OS X Server: This is Apple's server operatingsystem. It is similar to the consumer release of Mac OS X, but alsoincludes a suite of network services, such as a print server, filesharing, QuickTime streaming, NetBoot, and advanced webhosting. For more information, see Apple's Mac OS X Server page.

iOS: Based on Mac OS X, versions of iOS run on theiPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad. The iOS was designed forhandheld devices, and is much more tightly controlled than otherversions of Mac OS X. Despite their shared origins, applications(apps) developed for iOS are not compatible with Mac OS X, and viceversa.

Darwin:Darwin is the Unix-likefoundation upon which Mac OS X is based. Its code is opensource, and it is available as a stand-alone operatingsystem. Although Darwin will run many Unix applications, including theX Window System, it does not have the Mac OS X interfaceand thus will not run Mac OS X applications. For more information, seeApple's Developer Open Sourcepage.

Next layer is the graphics system which contains Quartz, OpenGL and QuickTime. Then is the application layer which has four components, namely Classic, Carbon, Cocoa and Java. The top layer is Aqua, which is the user interface.

A diagram that demonstrates the structure of Mac OS X is as follows βˆ’

Components of the Mac OS X Structure

Details about the different components of the Mac OS X structure as seen in the image above are as follows βˆ’

Core OS

The Darwin Core is based on the BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) version of Unix. Mach is the main part of the Darwin core and it performs operations such as memory use, data flow from and to CPU etc. Darwin is also open source i.e. anyone can obtain its source code and make modifications to it. Different versions of Darwin can be used to enhance the Mac OS X.

Some of the major features of the Darwin core are protected memory, automatic memory management, preemptive multitasking, advanced virtual memory etc. It also provides I/O services for Mac OS X and supports plug-and-play, hot-swapping and power management.

Graphics Subsystem

The graphics subsystem in the Mac OS X contains three parts i.e. Quartz, OpenGL and QuickTime. The 2-D graphics in the graphics subsystem is managed by Quartz. It provides fonts, interface graphics, rendering of the images etc. OpenGL provides support for 3-D graphics in the system such as texture mapping, transparency, antialiasing, atmospheric effects, special effects etc.

It is also used in Unix and Windows systems. QuickTime is used for different digital media such as digital video, audio and video streaming etc. It also enables creative applications such as iMovie, iTunes etc.

Apple imessage games. The application subsystem in Mac OS X provides the classic environment to run classic applications. Carbon, Cocoa and Java are the three application development environments available.

The classic environment makes sure that applications written for the previous versions of the operating system can run smoothly. The carbon environment is used to port existing applications to carbon application program interfaces. This is called carbonising the application. The cocoa environment provides object-oriented application development environment. The cocoa applications use the benefits of the Mac OS X Structure the most. The Java applications and Java applets can be run using the Java environment.

User Interface

Aqua is the user interface of Mac OS X. It provides good visual features as well as the tools to customize the user interface as per the user requirements. Aqua contains extensive use of colour and texture as well as extremely detailed icons. Game king cleopatra keno. It is both pleasant to view and efficient to use.
